April Update

posted Apr 15, 2010 6:36 PM by Office Secretary

Dear Members and Friends of Central Square,

The Church Council has had several guests over the last two meetings. Much deliberation and prayer has been going on as a result. One concern that weighs upon many of us in council has been what will happen to our building if we sell it? Who will it go to? What will they do with it? How long will they keep it?

At the March meeting a proposal was made to offer the building to the Portland Public Library. Although giving away the building would mean there would be little return to continue to support the congregation, the Council passed a motion to open a discussion to offer the building and grounds with the following conditions:

A. That Central Square sell the church property to them at a nominal price, significantly below market value.
B. That the following covenants be considered in this discussion:
       1. That the building and property is to be used for at least 20 years by the Portland Public Library.
       2. That the building and property is to continue as a public library as long after that as practicable.
       3. That if it is not possible to continue as a library then any use after that time would be for educational, religious, cultural or community service use.
       4. That the building and property is to be maintained in condition that would make it an asset to the community.
       5. That members of Central Square Baptist Church be allowed to hold one or two reunions within the building each year if they so desire.

The Council agreed that such an arrangement would be to the benefit of the church and the community.  It would allow the preservation of our well loved building in a manner which would allow us to both visit and use it as individuals. It would provide an important and vital service to the people of this part of the city, helping the community in a way which we have always striven to do.

A letter to this effect was sent to the Executive Director of the Portland Public Library this week.

The next meeting of the Council which is of course open to everyone involved in the church, will be at 1:30PM on April 18th.

News for March

posted Mar 2, 2010 1:48 PM by Office Secretary

Dear Members and Friends of Central Square,

At the Council meeting of February 21st, it was decided to hold a Prayer and Share service with music this Sunday, March 7th at 1:30 in the Fireside Room at Central Square. Those present felt the need for us to stay in contact with each other in the hope of reestablishing our fellowship in the future. Marje Johnson will be in charge of the service and we hope that you all will come. It will be quite informal and give us a chance to sing and pray together once again.

Our plans proceed for the Easter Service at 10 AM on Sunday April 4th. The Diaconate is planning this service.

We would like to remind you that the Prayer Chain is still operating and to urge you to call Marje Johnson at 797-4833 to start the chain for anyone in need. One person who is on our hearts right now is Nikki Davison, the daughter of Ellen Faulkner. Nikki has suffered a recurrence of her brain cancer and is in need of our prayers. Because of the tremendous costs associated with her treatment some fund raisers are being held that you may wish to attend. One of these which you may enjoy is A Concert Of Life And Love For the Benefit of Nikki Davisson to be held on Sunday, April 11, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, Congress Street, Portland (next to Westgate Shopping Plaza) A free-will offering will be taken. For more information about Nikki and her progress, check out the website:

www.helpournikki.net

Also In order for us to keep everyone informed about the church and our people, we are asking those of you who have email to share your address with us. This would allow us to be more timely in giving you updated information as well as saving us the cost of postage for mailing letters. We gave up our bulk mailing because of the annual cost and so all mailings now go first class. That is why this letter is only being sent to those who have been regular attendees of our services. If you know of someone who did not receive this letter and should, please notify me at 774-5446 or email atmlewis@maine.rr.com. Please use that email address to provide me with your email address for future use.

The next Council Meeting will be held at 1:30 in the Fireside Room on March 21st. Everyone is welcome.

On behalf of the Church Council,

Mary Lewis

Letter from Council

January 19, 2010

Dear Members and Friends of Central Square,

It is with deep sadness that we must tell you that on Sunday, January 10th, the church membership voted in a Special Business Meeting, to put the building and property of the church up for sale. As you must be aware, we have been struggling over the last several years to maintain an aging building while faced with a dwindling congregation and subsequently a falling income. We have been forced to draw down our invested funds to the point where they will no longer enable us to keep going. Our fears as a Council have been that the money would run out and we would be left unable to care for the building. Because of these factors, there seemed to be no other course but to sell while we still had enough to maintain it until a sale could be finalized.

The financial reality forced us to give our staff, including Pastor Lavway, notice that, as of the end of 2009, it was unlikely that we could continue paying their salaries. Fortunately, Pastor Lavway found a calling to another church across the country in San Jose, California. So, at this point in time, the only paid staff is our custodian who will be checking on the furnace as well as the general health of the building as part of our security system. He will also clear the sidewalks and steps when there are storms.

Without a Pastor, it is difficult to provide regular church worship services. We didn’t completely close the door to them, allowing the Council to decide if and when they might be held. Of course, we had to notify the Russian congregation that we could no longer provide them space for their services either. And at the Council meeting this last Sunday, we decided to definitely hold an Easter Worship Service on April 4th.

This Council meeting was well attended with many of the congregation there as well as the Council itself. We discussed the implications of the church membership's decision to close as well as the proper ways to proceed with the many things that need to be done to meet this decision. We are doing our best to compassionately meet all the needs of both the people of Central Square as we deal with the closing of our church building.

The next Council meeting is scheduled for Sunday, February 21st at 10 AM at the church. All interested people are invited to attend this meeting. The Council asks for your continuing support with your prayers, your financial help which is still needed to maintain our beautiful building until it finds a new owner. You may contact any of us directly if you have question or ideas either by email or phone. There is still the hope that the sale of the building will allow us to fund the purchase of land and the building of a new, smaller church where we can continue to worship and serve our Lord together.
